If Your Feel Like Being Social

You Can Reach Out to Me Beyond this Website Through My Social Media Sites Found at the Bottom of this Page

Hi. This is usually where Designers tell you about what they do and things they like. I figure it is more interesting to hear about what I can’t do and things I don’t like. I can’t ice skate, swim, or hip hop dance (yet). I don’t like prunes, manila folders, or shag carpeting. Other than that I am pretty wide open. Feel free to take a look around my portfolio and let me know what you think.

About Me Ok, I want to avoid a long drawn out biography, which ultimately may or may not interest you. I would say my path here is slightly less traditional, as I did not study graphic design specifically until much later in my career, but these days you do hear some truly obscure origin stories. Mine starts as a pre-med student, who in the 11th hour found Art History and studio art as my calling in college. Not to say I didn’t have some background in these fields, as my father is a long time printmaker and my mother is a multi-media and graphic designer. It was in my genes. I didn’t actually come into the graphic design field until my education research position at the Louisville Speed Art Museum required as much design work as actual research. Thank you mom for raising me from Photoshop 1.0 to Indesign. I continued to pursue post-graduate Art History study until going full time at UPS with the Airline division as a Graphic Designer. You’ll notice that I refer to myself as a “media” designer, largely due to the fact that I work in many fields outside of traditional “graphic” design. The theme for my entire career to this point is evolution. In my day job, graphic design work led to photography work and then most recently video production and user interface design. My personal work is heavily influenced by photography and illustration, so I feel that media designer tends to be a more accurate description of what I do. Ok, I feel I’m already getting long winded, so I’ll cut it here and let the work do the rest of the talking.

Brand Design The key to corporate brand design is finding the creative within the guidelines. I think one of the greatest challenges as a brand designer is looking at the rules and finding the “spark” that both holds to the brand message while at the same time creates something new and visually interesting. Trust me, it can be done. You may do more PowerPoint templates than promotional campaigns, but when given a chance at bat, you want to make sure it’s a home run.
(This now fulfills my quota of baseball analogies for this website.)

2007 UPS Global Small Business Forum

  • The invite was designed to look like a shipping box when closed with a spot varnish on on the tape
  • Opening the invite reveals the theme for the forum
  • I continued the shipping box theme in the interior of the invite shell
  • The back side of the invite card and shell can be seem here. The invite shell included a shipping address that was the forum location
  • The cover of the Business Forum Programs
  • The agenda layout of the Business Forum Programs
  • The welcome page and stamp page layout of the Business Forum Program
  • A look and the final banner signage designed to coordinate with the rest of the Forum materials.
  • The Business Forum table tents and name tags

The 2007 UPS Global Small Business Forum was one of my first large scale projects for UPS as a full time employee. I was tasked with creating an overall design concept within brand guidelines, to run through the invitation, event program and schedule, booth banners, table tents, nametags, and PowerPoint templates that were used by the presenters. The design for the invitation went on to win a silver award for graphic design in the 2007 Louisville Graphic Design Association’s annual 100Show.

Sample of Daily UPS Design Work

  • Top: Billboard Design for Fly Lansing, Michigan. Bottom: Final Installation for 1 of 13 ad spots
  • Newspaper style design work for the UPS Airline paper The UPS Dispatch
  • Welcome Posters for visiting companies to UPS Worldport

As an In-House Designer, I often find myself working on a variety of different projects at any given time. In the five years I have been with UPS, I have completed roughly 700 projects. Some projects might be as simple as a logo licensing agreement, while others may require an entire design concept consisting of several pieces of collateral materials like the Global Small Business Forum. Here is a sampling of the variety of projects that I have worked on.

Kentucky Candy Buffet Complany Logo, Business Card, and Flyer

  • The Kentucky Candy Buffet Company Logo
  • The font and back of the Kentucky Candy Buffet Company business card
  • The front of the Kentucky Candy Buffet Company 5x7 Flyer
  • The back of the Kentucky Candy Buffet Company 5x7 Flyer

While my day job keeps me pretty busy, occasionally I do freelance work on the side. Being a long time acquaintance of one of the owners of the Kentucky Candy Buffet Company, I was approached to do a logo system as they started their business. This relationship continued with me designing a business card and brochure flyer. Kentucky Candy Buffet has seen great success in the last year with features in The Kentucky Perfect Wedding Guide and Louisville Bride Magazine.

Personal Projects If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a huge nerd. You can see the proof in how I spend my free time, often designing posters based on sci-fi television shows and comic books. But let’s face it, nerds rule the world. I’m an active participant in the online design community and have been truly inspired by the work of Olly Moss, Nubby Twiglet, Jeff Sheldon of Ugmonk, and Fabio Sasso of Abduzeedo.com, to name just a few. These people are not only great designers and illustrators, but also entrepreneurs and brands. Someday I hope to run my own business and my personal projects are the first step.

Television Show Poster Series

    Mad Men
  • Mad Men: Breakfast
  • Mad Men: Lunch
  • Mad Men: Dinner
  • Star Trek
  • Star Trek: Captain
  • Star Trek: Security Officer
  • Star Trek: Science Officer
  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Battlestar Galactica: The Thirteenth Tribe
  • Battlestar Galactica: The Harbinger of Death
  • Battlestar Galactica: There Are Many Copies

I am fascinated with the recent trend of recreating classic movie and television series posters in a kind of minimalist/ retro style. My plan for this series was to create a set of 3 posters for some of my favorite television shows. The final set of posters for Battlestar Galactica is a slight departure from the first 2 sets because I wanted to work with more advanced illustration techniques.

2010 Wall Calendar

  • 2010 Wall Calendar
  • 2010 Wall Calendar: Dates
  • 2010 Wall Calendar: Lunar Phases
  • 2010 Wall Calendar: Holidays
  • 2010 Wall Calendar: Quote

I wanted something specific for my wall calendar last year, so I decided to design my own. This is a large format calendar, designed specifically for my work cube. It measures to 26" x 38." I was inspired by the phases of the moon and incorporated that into the design. I also wanted to go slightly retro in the overall feel. Custom printed at zazzle.com. Recently this work was included in the book, "Save the Date: New Ideas and Approaches in Calendar Design " published by Victionary Workshop Limited.

You can pick up a copy of "Save the Date" from Amazon or here directly from the publisher at www.victionary.com

2010 Help Haiti: Earthquake Relief Poster

  • 2010 Help Haiti: Earthquake Relief Poster
  • 2010 Help Haiti: Earthquake Relief Poster
  • 2010 Help Haiti: Earthquake Relief Poster

After seeing the devastation in Haiti caused by the earthquake, and other designers starting to create posters to help. I decided to create my own poster to help raise money for the relief effort. I sold the poster through Zazzle.com with 100% of my profit from the sale going to the American Red Cross for Haiti relief and development. In total I raised $70.00, which I was really proud of.

Random Design and Illustration Work

  • Design created as part of the Minimalz behance.net group. Theme: Jack Nicholson
  • Design created as part of the Minimalz behance.net group. Theme: Brad Pitt

Occasionally things I see or read will inspire me and I will put together a quick design based off of that inspiration. These little projects also help me to play with new texturing techniques in Photoshop or illustration ideas in Illustrator. Typically, I only work on things that I would like to hang up on my own wall.

Photography What is funny is that I initially thought my interest in photography started 2 years ago when it became a necessity for my day job. However, digging through almost 10 years of photos from high school to college I realized that I have always been that guy with a camera. While I still love capturing images of daily life, I expanded my repertoire to include studio style portraits. Experimenting with light and different post-production techniques has been eye opening and a lot of fun. More recently, I evolved from a lover of the still image to a lover of the moving image thanks to DLSR cameras that shoot amazing HD video. Look for more from me in this medium in the future.

The budget crunch over the last few years requires a lot of our photography needs to be taken care of in-house. This gives me the opportunity to advance my skills as a photographer and to experiment with various portrait lighting techniques, both natural and through the use of off-camera flash.

I found the requests for portrait photography to be on the rise as of late. The need for various social media profile pictures really seems to be driving this trend. I do quite a bit of self-portrait work, as I am always available to experiment on myself. Luckily, I have also had friends who have helped out or needed portraits for book jackets or online profiles.
